Interrelating With Others To Share Your Life

Christ must be received individually, but He must be shared corporately with other brothers and sisters if we would grow into the likeness of Christ. In fact, we never find the word “saint” in the New Testament, but only the word “saints.” It has been said, “There is no such thing as a solitary Christian in the New Testament.” But how does our relationship to other Christians contribute to our own spiritual life and being conformed to the image of Christ? Simply because God Himself has created us as inter-dependent or “members one of another”: “so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another” (Romans 12:5). How do we show this interdependence or how can one believer contribute to the life of another brother or sister? By meeting together for mutual encouragement Thus God commands in Hebrews 10:25: “…not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (NIV). The word “encouraging” is the Greek word Parakaleo, meaning to “come alongside” to help another. Jesus Himself calls the Holy Spirit the Parakeletos, the One who comes alongside of each believer to be his or her Comforter, Teacher, Helper, etc. However, the way the Holy Spirit accomplishes this wonderful ministry is often by sending believers through whom He works. By ministering to others by the use of our spiritual gifts Thus the Apostle Peter writes: “As each one has received a gift (the charismata—“grace gift”), minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10, Parentheses added). What an amazing statement—that God gives each individual gifts for him or her to use for their fellow Christians and by which they minister all kinds of graces to them. When we operate in our spiritual giftedness, we are dispensers of God’s grace to others. When we are not operating in our NOTES spiritual giftedness, we are withholding the grace that God wants to give others through us. For example, God has given some the gift of teaching. But the gift of teaching is not for the benefit of the teacher, but for other Christians. When someone gifted in teaching shares it with others, the others are greatly blessed, and not only so, but the teacher himself will feel greatly fulfilled, and he will be made more and more like Christ. Suppose he fails to share his gift: it will diminish. By mentoring others through spiritual partnerships Every Christian needs a person who will meet with them regularly and hold them accountable for the way they are living. Such a mentor should love their mentee so much that they will not just enjoy a coffee-drinking relationship, but will ask the tough questions like: • Are you having a meaningful time with the Lord each day? • Are you internalizing the Word of God constantly? • H ow are you doing with regard to loving your wife as Christ loves the church? • Are you guilty of any impurity (thoughts, porn, etc.)? By intercessory prayer There is nothing one Christian can do for another as important as intercessory prayer. What a joy and a privilege this is. In fact, some find it hard to pray but when they begin to intercede for others they find that the Holy Spirit comes upon them in a wonderful way. It has been said, “When we work, we work; but when we pray, God works.” Many who mentor have testified of this truth as they have learned to intercede in the lives of others through intercessory prayer. You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you can never do more than pray until you have prayed. How true, how true, and in no area is it truer than when we pray for one another. And at the same time we are praying for others, we are becoming more and more like Christ, conforming to His image, and developing into a true Christ follower.
