Deuteronomy 27:9–26 Moses has concluded giving the people the reminders of the Law. Now he turns to the individual curses that will follow those who don't obey and a solemn call for Israel to embrace their identity as God's holy people by committing to His commandments and acknowledging the serious consequences of breaking His covenant. Core Message and Instructions: • The Call to Listen: Moses and the Levitical priests command Israel to be silent and pay attention, reminding them that they officially became the people of the Lord their God on that day. • The Two Mountains: Moses instructs the tribes to divide upon crossing the Jordan River. Six tribes (Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin) stand on Mount Gerizim to pronounce blessings, while six tribes (Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali) stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses. • Declaring the Curses: The Levites read aloud specific forbidden actions, and the entire assembly responds with "Amen" to confirm God's standard of justice. • Declaring the Curses: The Levites read aloud specific forbidden actions, and the entire assembly responds with "Amen" to confirm God's standard of justice. Specific Warnings (Verses 15–23) The Message unveils hidden and destructive sins that violate community trust, family honor, and moral integrity: • Making idols or graven images. • Dishonoring or disrespecting father and mother. • Moving a neighbor’s boundary marker. • Misleading a blind person on the road. • Withholding justice from the vulnerable, foreigner, fatherless, or widow. • Engaging in severe sexual immorality, including incestuous relationship.
